The Rugby League Benevolent Fund is sad to announce the death of Luke Bryan, the former Haydock ARLFC junior who passed away yesterday in hospital aged 46.

Luke suffered a catastrophic spinal injury playing for Haydock Under-18s in 1996, leaving him paralysed from the neck down and having to spend much of the rest of his life bed-bound or confined to a wheelchair.

Over the last 11 years, Luke and his family have been supported by the RL Benevolent Fund which, in partnership with the Steve Prescott Foundation, helped purchase and modify a bungalow that provided a much-enhanced quality of life for him.

Luke had been in and out of hospital for much of his adult life and sadly did not recover from his latest illness after being readmitted to hospital two months ago.

“Luke was a very special young man who faced many obstacles throughout his life and it was a real privilege to get to know him,” said RL Benevolent Fund manager Francis Stephenson.

“He was a real fighter who battled against so much adversity for so long. His passing leaves everyone who knew him immensely saddened.

“Our thoughts are very much with Luke’s mum, Christine, and his brother and sister Matthew and Sally at this tragic time.”
